Original oil painting on canvas.
A surprise June snowstorm ripped across Paulina Lake (the collapsed caldera of the Newberry volcano) catching even those with a honed awareness of their environment, and the weather, off guard. The energy shifted from a gentle wander to the hot springs, to leaning into the wind and weather and trudging towards the reward of a soak in the warm water. This painting was inspired by the alpine trees, on the shore of Paulina Lake, bent by weather that was no surprise to them, and the summer alpine flowers that are tough enough to bloom in the snow. Fitting for a striking landscaped shaped by volatility
This painting was part of the Visual Echoes exhibit at Bend, Oregon's Scalehouse Contemporary Gallery in June 2026.
